43 things

'One minute I held the key, then the walls were closed on me ...' - Coldplay, Viva la Vida

I filled in my new 43 things list yesterday. I had an old one from 2006. I was surprised at how many of my goals were sort of non-tangible really non-achievable type of things. Obviously I wasn't listening in the bit where they told us how to set goals in school : Make them achievable dammit!

Achieved from my old list:

  • Get my driver's licence. Yes!
  • Lose 40 pounds. Done and more.
  • Go to the gym at least three times a week. Not at the moment but I did for two years.
  • Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
  • Go vegetarian. Did that and then stopped, because I really do quite like being an omnivore.

My new list is here.

I'd love to know if you have a 43 things list too.

You can do a full diving course in Mauritius for around €300
You can snorkel in Mauritius and see this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dshaw78/sets/72157605355035619/
And when you get around to Dublin make sure you go see the book of Kells in the Trinity College Library, have at least one Guinness and spend some time one night in the Porter House, Temple Bar.

Great list - and way to go actually crossing things off your old list!!

I've always been both drawn to and scared of making a 43 Things list. Drawn to because I like making lists and scared of because once you make a list, it's there for you to look back on and see all the stuff you didn't achieve... or maybe that's just me!!

Do go to Jersey, in the middle of the summer. There are deserted beaches there that will make you feel you are back in Africa, only the waves are teensy, so perfect for wusses like me! And Venice is everything they say it is. As a 44th thing, please also go to see the Alhambra in Granada - it is probably the best edifice I have ever visited. And do, do, do learn to ski!! It's the best thing I ever did at my advanced age ;-)

I had a much shorter list when I was a student, much of which remains unachieved. There were things like hearing Beethoven's (seldom performed) Choral Fantasia and 9th symphony, and Mozart's Magic Flute performed live (managed the latter 2); seeing killer whales in the wild; arriving in New York by ship; seeing the Northern Lights; (all as yet unachieved) and seeing Gustav Klimt's The Kiss in the flesh - ticked and done! My list now would probably include more exercise, getting rid of excess material possessions, spending more time with my family (tricky when they are on another continent), getting paid to write (working on that one) and speaking another European language fluently (giving Spanish a try).

Tell me what you want me to know.
